Rights at Work campaign - Spotlight

May 30, 2006

“Workers at Spotlight will be given a pay increase of just two cents an hour in exchange for losing entitlements like penalty rates, rest breaks and overtime.

The Australian-owned chain of fabric and homewares stores employs 6000 workers and rakes in over $600 million a year. But new staff will lose up to $90 a week under the terms of Spotlight’s new AWA individual contracts.

Support the Spotlight staff. Tell Spotlight’s owners Morry Fraid and Ruben Fried how you feel about their company’s actions.

Spotlight’s management has argued that they were given the green light to rip off workers by the Howard Government. “Our AWA obviously meets all of the Work Choices requirements,” they told AAP. “We are not the ones writing the laws,” they told the Herald Sun. They’re right. The new IR laws encourage businesses to cut their employees’ take home pay and conditions. But is this how Australian businesses should treat their staff?

Tell Spotlight: Just because the IR laws let you to rip off workers doesn’t mean you have to. www.rightsatwork.com.au/campaigns/spotlight

Many thanks,
Sharan Burrow, Greg Combet,
and the Rights at Work campaign team.”

morepraxis Community?

May 29, 2006

Angry Young Thing has posted a question that could use a page of its own.

  1. angry young thing Says:
Judas; Yes, but how can we make morepraxis more of a ‘community’?

I think that this is a good question for the morepraxis community to answer together.

Personally, it feels most like an active community to me in the weeks where other members posts and comments have to be scheduled so each post gets a days on the top of the page. Basically when I can see that people are reading and engaging with the content. It also helps that some of our members are part of communities I spend time with.

More of my thinking about our community is in the about morepraxis and join our community

Recently morepraxis had an upgrade and new features were added to make our site more functional and easy to navigate. These addtions hopefully help people connect better to what goes up and builds the sense of community too.

….So the space is open (as always) to suggest ways to build and develop morepraxis as a site, community, resource and a movement.

What will make morepraxis more of a community for you?

Age with motivation from Angry Young Thing :)

Simply Sharing Week 14-21 May

May 16, 2006

The decision to live simply and share what we have is recognition that we can make a difference to the massive problems of injustice and poverty in the world: by sacrificing some luxuries in our own lives, we can fill the future with hope.

Simply Sharing Week is a development education program for schools and churches all over Australia and is a joint program of Caritas Australia and Christian World Service/National Council of Churches Australia.

Each year, we choose one country to focus on as a case study. On 14-21 May 2006, we are focussing on health in the Solomon Islands!

This website has lots of useful information for you to host your own Simply Sharing Week at any time of year that suits your group best. If you would like to know more, contact Kaylea on (03) 9650 6811, email kfearn@ncca.org.au.
