UCA - Tap into leadership 08
January 23, 2008
| April 19, 2008 | ||
| 9:30 am | to | 5:00 pm |
Have you had trouble finding leaders willing to lead youth bible studies or start local mission within your faith community? If so you’re not alone. I am writing to ask for your help in creating, sustaining and discipling leadership in your youth and young adults. As such this year we are running a ‘Tap a Leader on the Shoulder’ Campaign. As you would expect it involves approaching people with potential for leadership or those leaders who could use some support, training and encouraging.
We will begin with a leadership training and discernment day on April 19 (costs $25 - Ringwood UCA, 30-32 Station St, Ringwood) with a focus of creating a space for leaders to discern their gifts / areas of interest and get a taste of some learning/training. From there the aim is to create small groups locally to work through Dave Andrews ‘Compassionate Community Work’ Course ($100 including leadership day). Finally, we (with your help) will provide mentors/coaches for each group and encourage people to attend educational and experiential learning in line with their call throughout the year.
Also, I am available to run the five week course MERGE AHEAD as a introduction to local mission and as a means of gathering your group. MERGE AHEAD is a time to think, act and reflect on becoming the church we wish we were. It is designed for groups, churches, youth groups and faith communities to reflect on the theology and lifestyle of following Jesus in today’s world.
Thought of a few people to tap on the shoulder? Well….

Faith Based Community Work
January 23, 2008
“Compassionate Community work is an introductory course on Christ-like community work. It can be studied formally as a subject for university or seminary - or informally at home or in your church or community. The Compassionate Community Work course has an inner dimension and and outer dimension. The inner dimension, or “soul,”: of the course is my passion for in situ, spiritual, experiential, personal, relational, ethical, action-reflection community development education. It seeks to provide people with the opportunity to explore a dynamic spirituality that is essential for developing a healthy faith-based community. The Trinity is the model, Christ is the example. the Gospel is the process, and the Spirit is the power for healthy faith-based community development.” Dave Andrews
Course Resources, Compassionate Community work course book and a copy of “Not Religion but Love’ which is used as a reflective text book.
avaaz Action - Kenya
January 20, 2008
Dear friends,
Kenya still teeters on the brink of disaster – today bullets are flying on the streets, with over 600 killed and 250,000 made homeless as government and opposition dispute the presidency. There’s hope yet, as Kenyan civil society groups stand up for peace and justice — but only dialogue and an independent review of the tainted election can end this crisis and prevent escalating violence.
The world can play a crucial role: by reinforcing the efforts of mediators like Kofi Annan, and refusing to recognize any government until it is legitimately established. 50,000 Avaaz members have already sent this message to our foreign ministers, and almost all have listened so far. But inside Kenya, hardline leaders are sowing conflict.
President Kibaki and opposition leader Odinga need to hear that international legitimacy will only come after a mediated resolution. To send this message, we’re taking out a full page ad in The East African Standard, an influential Kenyan newspaper. The ad will list the number of messages we’ve sent to our governments - can we double its strength by sending 100,000 messages this week before the ad runs? Click below to see the ad, send your message and spread the word:

GetUp Action - Peoples Agenda
January 16, 2008
Dear friends,
Welcome to the new year! Right now our newly elected politicians are packing their bags for Canberra - and we want your voices ringing in their ears as they rise to speak when Parliament resumes in ‘08.
That is why in December thousands of GetUp members simultaneously met in 327 ‘Vision GetTogethers’ in almost every electorate across the country. Their mission? To draft our vision for the nation, and our priorities for the new Government.
Now it’s time for you to take part in this unprecedented exercise in democracy by voting on that vision. Taking just a few minutes, complete our simple one-page poll to rank your priorities for the next term of Parliament - before we declare the results by the week’s end:

UpperRoom - New Venue - Prophets of Hope
January 9, 2008
| February 4, 2008 | ||
| 6:00 pm | to | 8:30 pm |
Hi guys we have a new venue. The S-Bar (Shop 18, Village Walk, O’Sullivan Road, Glen Waverley). The nice owners have offered us the front section of their bar/restaurant for each month. Also some talk of locally sourced and more ethical produce, using fairer trade coffee and bringing our praxis wine all on a ground floor with disable access. Sound good? Yeah that’s what we thought!
If you would like to be part of the team this year or have ideas for topic/causes, artists (and we thought this year a couple of speakers would be nice), then speak up. I would like to get a new postcard with our plan/program out by April.
We kick off Feb 4
The Upper Room Project meets the first Monday of each month (6-8:30pm) to engage with spirituality and justice as struggled with and fought for by the Prophets and Jesus. We meet in the S Bar (Shop 18, Village Walk, O’Sullivan Road, Glen Waverley ) with gallery space, discussion corners, opportunity for practical response and pondering space. We hope the upper room will be
- Space to rest/relax with your tribe
- Be challenged by the prophetic call of compassion
- Connect with heartbeats for living
There will be food, wine and friends plus
- a gallery space for photos and other art.
- activist space - activities, information and people deeply into that topic to meet
- conversational space - multimedia and communally led (an interview, music, texts, a place to chat)
Please bring your friends - all are welcome
This month we will be thinking about our hopes for the this year ahead both personally, politically and as a mob. Of course art, conversation and friends. Cya there.
