would you comment on the décor?

Notice the Ikea lamp shades or made-in-china throw cushions?
Would you appreciate the Laura Ashley inspired window dressings
and their delicate, but effective shield
from all that is wrong with the world outside?

Enjoy the aircon. The chilled water.
And relax, unbothered,
amid the moat of space surrounding the couch?

Would you sit with a teacup on your lap
politely accepting a second biscuit (corn chip / slice of mango)
and talk about unoffensive things

(like Nicole Kidman’s wedding gown
and the benefits of soya milk?)

Take pleasure in my lovely creation, in a way that doesn’t upset the feng shui.

Or would you say something that sits uncomfortably in the spaciousness
and sends a little tremor
through the shelves
of unusable trinkets from far off places.

Remark that when Mother Theresa died, she left behind only a sari
and a plastic bucket,
(Ghandi, a thermos flask and a pair of specks…)

…And inquire about the refurbishment of a different kind of interior?…

And would I feel disappointed if you left without complimenting
my polished cedar floors.
Unmoved by my lovely walls,
painted the color of blood?

Maybe I know already what your thoughts might be
and that’s why I have so much trouble inviting you over for a drink…..
